Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the “Global Soil Partnership”, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has supported the formal establishment of the World Soil Day as a global awareness raising platform. The FAO Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly.
The 68th UN General Assembly also declared 2015 the International Year of Soils.
The winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year, after which the days gradually begin to lengthen. Throughout the world and through the ages people have celebrated the return of the light at this time. This year the Winter Solstice occurs on December 22 at 9:48 pm CST.
