Permablitz

PERMA-WHAT??

A Permablitz is an organized gathering of community members with the intention of transforming space (usually an urban backyard) into a productive ecosystem through Permaculture design. The host and permaculture designer will have the design ready and now everyone pitches in to help make this vision a reality. Many hands make light work! Permablitzes are free to attend and organized on a voluntary basis.

A little permablitz history:  Dan Palmer and Adam Grub from the Melbourne Permaculture community group created the original permablitz network as a way of encouraging Melbourne to embrace edible landscaping while building community at the same time. Find out more at: http://www.permablitz.net

WHO PARTICIPATES?

Everyone! If you enjoy meeting new people, sharing skills, getting your hands dirty and learning something new, you’ll love a permablitz.

Don’t worry if you have no gardening experience or you know nothing about permaculture. Permablitzes are a great way to learn. There are always a variety of jobs whatever your experience or physical ability. We have had people of all ages come to take part –  from 3 to 75 years.

We also need people to take photos and videos of each Permablitz. Let us know if this interests you.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

You can expect sheet mulching, weeding, moving compost, planting fruit trees, digging paths/swales, and more! You’ll be given direction, and there will be mini-workshops held throughout the day for more in depth instruction on specific tasks.
.
A typical Blitz runs as follows:
.
9:00 am
We usually start each blitz with 15-30 minute stretching  or yoga practice to loosen everyone up.
9:30am
Introductions (and coffee or tea)! You’ll get an idea of what we will be doing over the day and what mini-workshops will be happening.
10:00am
Get to work! Everyone divides into groups to tackle projects and tasks. People tend to move independently between tasks as they feel they need a change.
11:00am
The first mini-workshop of the day usually happens now. Expect something like: building a compost bin, using a water level, installing rain water barrels, etc.
12:00pm
Lunch – provided by host.
1:00pm
Back to work with mini-workshops throughout the afternoon as appropriate.
4:00pm
Gather in a circle to celebrate a day of hard work and review what we have done!
